We’ve been anxiously awaiting our review from Audubon New York and it’s finally done! We had them out to our sugarbush earlier this summer to take a look around. We’re proud to be able to say we’re now one of the few NYS maple producers recognized as being a “bird-friendly sugarbush” by Audubon New York. In case you’re wondering about this odd term we keep throwing around, sugarbush just means a forest area that maple producers utilize because it has a good amount of maple trees they can tap to make syrup. Our sugarbush has a wide variety of tree species of all different ages as well as underbrush to ensure diversity of habitat. We’ve even kept some dead trees to make sure birds such as owls have nesting areas. We can personally attest to seeing (and hearing!) pileated woodpeckers, barred owls, scarlet tanagers, Baltimore orioles, American woodcocks, and so many more! My personal goal is to see more of the American woodcock and hopefully finally see an Eastern whip-poor-will or northern bobwhite!
